MKS doesn't float like a boat or wander like a Town Car. Though larger than Taurus, it still slips into and out of parking spaces and garage stalls. But a bit more nimble steering would reduce the weighty feel in the wheel.

I have no idea what Tiguan means other than that it sounds like counterfeit Chinese currency. I do know that it's one of the best small SUVs on the road. Taking on the likes of the Ford Escape, Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V, the Tiguan is a gutsy little runabout with more style in its front bumper than most of the competition has through its rear tail lights.

The legend is real. The 2009 Nissan GT-R, the car known to many as the Nissan Skyline in Japan, can run as fast as the fastest Porsche. It handles as well as the most agile Lamborghini. It does all of those things at a relative fraction of the cost of its putative betters. It is a performance car supreme. And it is frustration of the most excruciating sort.

First Impressions from 2008 BMW X5 4.8i. I actually had quite a few first impressions. Oh my God, its gorgeous. Wow, I get to drive a BMW!. This is a really BIG vehicle!, but nothing compares to actually driving one. The X5 4.8i has a snarling 350-horsepower V8 engine, yet its stylish, technologically advanced, sexy and has some really great features. At first I thought it was snarling at me (it sounded like it was growling when accelerating), but I found it was actually snarling at the other cars on the road. Pass me, I dare you.

2009 Nissan GT-R .Nissan has a long history with the GT-R, first offering it as a sport modification to its Skyline sedan. The current Skyline, known in the U.S. as the Infiniti G37, is a completely different car from the new GT-R. The 2009 Nissan GT-R is a technical tour de force, with evidence of brilliance throughout. We would have a hard time with the GT-R as an everyday driver, but it offers fun and exhilaration at heart-stopping levels.

The 2008 Hyundai Elantra is the South Korean brand's compact sedan, slotting between the small Rio and the mid-size Sonata in the lineup. Completely redesigned last year, the current Elantra sedan is wider and longer, with more interior room than before-enough to make it a mid-size by some considerations. Of this year's model, Cars.com says, "the new Elantra adopts a taller, curvier look," noting that "it follows the look of the full-size Azera sedan-which is not the most distinctive design." During the oil crisis of the 1970s, Congress and then-President Richard Nixon imposed a 55 mph highway speed limit. The move inspired howls of protest perhaps best expressed in rocker Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55." The law was repealed in 1995. But, unthinkable though it might seem, more and more Bay Area motorists and lawmakers are speaking up in favor of slowing down. HOWARD WILNER 2009 luxury cars => So we partnered with Lin and Steven Austin of Orange County Rod and Custom in Placentia, California, built the truck and hoped our little Greasel would break the land speed record. The build, done over a few weeks time, took a derelict 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck, stretched the chassis, dropped in a Detroit Diesel engine, added two turbochargers and then converted the whole thing to run on peanut oil. Peanut Oil!
The end result is a truck with more than 3,000 horsepower and about 4,000 lb-ft of torque. In fact, it has so much power; they had to mount 747 airplane tires on the rig. To say it was a monumental undertaking would be an understatement. If you stopped by the shop over those few weeks, you would have noticed that Steve and Lin looked more and more exhausted as the days and weeks went on. Was it worth it? I would have to say, yes.

First of all, Mercedes has installed its Direct-Steer System on the SLK. The idea behind this system is that the steering ratio should be relatively slow on-center to reduce dartiness, but should quicken as you turn the wheel further. Rather than going the BMW Active Steering route, which uses a computer to control the constantly varying steering ratio, Mercedes chose the right route: the Porsche way. In place of complex actuators, pumps, and computers, the Mercedes system requires no additional parts - the rack is designed to change to a quicker ratio after a certain amount of lock.

That's a long way from diesel engines of yore. They were balky, noisy, nasty smelling and polluted the air not only with noxious fumes but sooty particulates as well.In fact, the diesels deliver such enormous torque, or low-rpm twisting force, that they feel more powerful off the line than their gasoline-engine counterparts. For example, the V6 diesel in the ML320 has 210 horsepower and 398 pounds-feet of torque. Its ML350 gasoline counterpart has 268 horsepower but 258 pounds-feet of torque.

The redesigned 2009 Pontiac Vibe AWD receives more aggressive styling, but maintains its balanced combination of useful cargo capacity and reasonable fuel economy. Looking sportier than it drives, the Vibes steering is not as crisp as some competitors, and the suspension is basic Toyota Corolla. Our test car was equipped with the same 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine as the base Camry, which certainly has easier work in the smaller Vibe. When mated to a smooth-shifting automatic transmission, this combo delivers a solid 20+ mpg around town. Rear-seat legroom and headroom are good, making this a good family alternative to a small SUV. Howard Wilner said that the rear cargo area and the seatbacks have a hard surface that is easy to clean after hauling, but it also tends to let items slide around a clever cargo organizer helps secure smaller items.

Despite displacing some 5,600 tall-in-the-saddle pounds, body motion is well controlled and predictable, even over undulating or broken surfaces. Only occasionally is there a hint that a truck chassis lives beneath. As for fuel mileage, we clocked nearly 300 miles of in-town and highway driving, averaging 21.7 miles per gallon. "Some of us still believe in electric drive and pure battery power," said Robert C. Stempel, the former GM chairman and chief executive who helped start the EV1 program. Forced out in the early 1990s, Stempel now runs a company that develops batteries and alternative automotive technology. Improvements in battery technology, especially with lithium ion batteries, may one day resurrect EVs by extending their driving range.

Largely spurred by the oil embargo of 1973 and a burgeoning environmental movement, backyard tinkerers started to test the limits of golf-cart batteries and plastic car bodies. These entrepreneurs picked up the challenge of increasing the speed and driving range that was left off six decades earlier, and as a result, learned a lot about batteries and electric vehicle technology.

So what happened to the 4,000 battery-powered ZEVs placed in California by major automakers between 1998 and 2003? (Most of the cars were leased rather than sold.) Despite the overwhelming enthusiasm and advocacy of electric car drivers, Ford, GM, Honda, and Toyota have all scrapped their electric vehicle (EV) programs, saying there's just no market for the cars. Subaru fans will lament the loss of Forester's quirkiness. Truckier styling and larger dimensions will make it easier for Forester to compete with the likes of Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, but also erase its "truck alternative" micro-ute charms. The new-generation model also costs less than its predecessor. Those savings come largely at the expense of interior materials quality, which went from near-premium in the out-going model to budget-grade in this version. Now competing more directly with the mainstream, Forester falls a little shy in overall refinement.
